Developer Diary: Pinecil - Smart Soldering Iron Display - Part 3

Part 3 - The Re-Design

As we discussed in Part 2 of our diary series, we found improvement possibilities in our original design to improve user experience. Based on these insights we have overhauled the UI design (as shown below).

Here’s a summary of the main changes we have implemented in our design:

  • Consistent Navigation and Layout: The upper part of the screen features the most important information and will now remain present for all the views (except for the settings screen).
  • Harmonized Value Presentation: Values are now formatted consistently over all views for a smoother user experience.
  • Simplified Preset Handling: Presets are now visible and can be selected at any time during the soldering process. Adjustment of preset temperatures was moved to the settings scene.
  • More Flexible Temperature Control: Temperature is no longer locked after starting the soldering process but can be changed via the slider at all times. You also have the ability to select a preset at any time or switch back from a preset to a manually selected temperature.

Based on this design the implementation is ongoing and in Part 4, we’ll take a closer look at the data binding architecture and communication with the Pinecil firmware.
